Hispanic Heritage Month is being celebrated in the land of Cheese Y Cositas.

Hola, friends and newcomers!

How are them Brewers doing?

Growing up as a first-generation Mexican American in Wisconsin meant two things: I didn't know what small talk was or that it was a necessary function in Midwest culture.

I learned that asking how the Brewers were doing would throw me into a big teaching moment about baseball and a lecture!

You know how Midwesterners are; we love to include our values or examples of grit in our analysis of a sports move or, importantly, what should have been done.

That is the love and kindness that only the Midwest can give you.

I enjoy talking about our similarities and helping folks understand the differences. Teaching older Midwesterners is a skill of patience. I use practical everyday examples and discuss how we can avoid painful assumptions if we slow down.

Like assuming that all Latinos like salsa. What?!!!

Hola! Hello!

My deep understanding of Latino identity and culture, combined with my expertise in recruitment and retention challenges, makes me an invaluable resource for organizations aiming to enhance their cultural competency and team cohesion. Through my interactive sessions, I teach teams about Latino history and identity so they build a more welcoming and inclusive environment for all employees.

Fun Fact: Wisconsin is the top cheese producer in the U.S., though California leads in dairy production.

Another Fun Fact National Hispanic Heritage Month is the only heritage month that spans from September 15th to October 15th, covering two months—highlighting the unique power of Latinidad.

What is Latinidad?

Latinidad combines "Latino" and "identity," representing the blend of English and Spanish in the U.S. It refers to the shared characteristics of Latin American people and their descendants without reducing those similarities to a single trait. However, it can also inadvertently erase or bypass race, though culturally, we share threads like rice dishes, Día de los Muertos, and independence celebrations. Notably, six Latin American countries celebrate their independence in September.

Latinos can be of any race—we are not all brown. This is one of the key aspects covered in my National Hispanic Heritage Month talk.

I’ve delivered this talk to banks, universities, businesses, and workgroups, helping them avoid a "Taco Tuesday Disaster."

Learning about anything new is better if we can laugh together!

Fun Fact: Salsa is the best-selling condiment in the U.S., but not every Latino likes salsa or tacos.

These are just one of the misinterpretations or troupes we cover.

I'm running a special that includes my ebook on top Latino and intersectionality terms!
